Whenever I decide to write about politics, I feel indebted to two sets of people, my family, who have supported me unconditionally, and my social circle, who often invite me to see politics beyond party passions. The truth is that I have no particular desire to write about Albanian politics as it has become today, intellectually impoverished, worn out and predictable. A tedious domain, without surprises and without ideas.
In the Democratic Party, I was a peripheral actor, but close enough to see key moments up close that give a clear picture of what really happened within it. That is precisely why I cannot remain silent today.
A few days ago, some media outlets “discovered” that Lulzim Basha had started a new job in the US, a news item with no source, no facts and that looked more like fake news than serious information. Today, Sali Berisha has returned to attacking him again. Not for any principled concern nor for any real political debate, but because Basha is the only “traitor” he has left to feed militancy and, above all, to avoid any responsibility for the situation the Democratic Party is in today.
Berisha knows very well that Basha has not sold and does not sell anyone, and this is precisely what burns him. If it were otherwise, Basha would be next to him today, just like many other MPs and figures who have learned to revolve according to the wind and interest. Basha has not betrayed any of the principles on which the Democratic Party was born as an open door to the USA and maintained a clear stance in support of SPAK.
Berisha knows very well that Basha has never collaborated with Edi Rama, because if this had happened, the DP seal would be in his pocket today.
Berisha knows just as well that no one from Basha's inner circle gets a building permit in Tirana or Albania. Berisha knows that Basha carried not only the Democratic Party, but also Berisha himself and Ilir Meta. He knows that in 2021 the DP was only 30 thousand votes away from victory, in elections where about 80 thousand votes were declared invalid, where criminal groups operated more openly than ever and where Edi Rama was represented by two figures declared non grata by international partners.
Today, meanwhile, the same Berisha who swears that he "does not bargain with Rama or anyone else", results in a minus of 300 thousand votes and this figure may have deepened even more today. Here arises the question that no one dares to ask out loud: how is it possible that the one who claims that he does not bargain with anyone is today so powerless to scratch Rama, even when he thinks that he has all the factors in his favor?
How is it possible that what he did to the Democratic Party on January 8, he never did to Edi Rama and the Prime Ministership?
Perhaps the answer is much simpler and much more painful than propaganda, the problem has never been Basha. The problem has been the refusal to accept responsibility, the fear of the mirror and the inability and fear of leaving politics. The problem is that the truth cannot be accepted why the DP is in this state, closed and turned into a bunker where they revolve around themselves.
In this vicious circle where Berisha has introduced the DP, the truth is very simple, no matter how much they try to hide it, he knows very well that Basha does not sell anyone. Precisely for this reason, Basha chose the Democratic Party and the USA, and not Berisha.
