Who threatened journalist Osman Stafa? SafeJournalists: Repeated case! Investigations to begin

The SafeJournalists Network has condemned the death threat against News24 journalist Osman Stafa, calling on Albanian authorities to urgently launch investigations to identify the person responsible.

Staff reported the incident to the Directorate for the Investigation of Cybercrimes on September 14 after receiving a threatening message via Facebook Messenger. The message threatened to find and kill the journalist, while also referring to the footage he had recently published.

According to the statement of the Staff to the police, on September 8, he had filmed and published footage from a protest near the Albanian Parliament, where four people in civilian clothes appeared during the detention of a protester.

SafeJournalists estimates that, given the content and time of sending the message, there is a possibility that the threat is related to the publication of these images.

The network has called on the State Police and the prosecution to conduct a swift and thorough investigation, secure digital evidence, and identify the person behind the account from which the threat was sent.

SafeJournalists also emphasizes that this is not the first case of threats or intimidation against journalist Osman Stafa.

In December 2025, the journalist received another threatening message after reporting on conditions at the Oncology Hospital in Tirana, while in June 2026, an incident of verbal insults and physical intimidation against him was reported after a protest in Tirana.

For this reason, SafeJournalists requests that previous incidents be taken into consideration when assessing the level of risk to the journalist and the measures that may be needed for his or her protection.

The network emphasizes that the repetition of threats against journalists may have discouraging consequences for media freedom and calls on the authorities to guarantee the safety of Staffa and investigate any possible connection of the threat to his journalistic work.
