July 2, 1990
A date that does not just belong to the calendar. A date that belongs to our national memory.
Thirty-six years ago, Albanians tore down the first wall of fear. Without weapons. Without power. Only with the courage of people who no longer accepted living on their knees.
They overcame the walls of embassies because the regime had closed all doors of freedom to them.
Today we are protesting again. Not because history repeats itself, but because once again Albania faces the same choice: to live in fear or to live with dignity. We must once again tear down the wall of fear. Because every power begins to fall the day when citizens stop fearing it.
DEMOCRACY OF THE FACADE
In 1990, Albanians didn't take to the streets just to change a government. They came out to change a system. They dreamed of justice. Freedom. Equality before the law.
But what happened?
The regime fell, but its spirit unfortunately survived.
Albania remained the only country in Europe that never opened the files of communism. No one was held accountable for half a century of crimes, imprisonments, and deportations.
Instead of a clear break with the past, a facade democracy was built. A system where the names changed, but not always the way of governance.
Today, after three decades, the question is the same:
Did the system really change, or just its administrators? That's why today we're not just protesting against a government.
We protest against a political caste that for 36 years has been recycling power, recycling privileges, and recycling the disappointment of Albanians.
FROM A MILLION BUNKER TO A MILLION TOWERS
What did the dictatorship leave us behind? It left us a million bunkers. Concrete to protect a government that was afraid of its own people. What is this political caste leaving us behind? A million towers.
Even these made of concrete. Even these built on fear, injustice, and often on citizens' property.
Yesterday we were bunkering. Today we are clearing.
The form has changed. The mentality has not.
Back then, concrete was used to isolate Albania. Today, concrete is used to erase memory, to replace cities with interests, and to turn development into the privilege of a few.
FROM ISOLATION TO EXPULSION
The communist regime kept Albanians locked within its borders. No one could leave.
Today, no one is stopping Albanians from leaving. But fewer and fewer Albanians are finding reasons to stay.
In 1990, Albanians entered embassies to flee the regime. Today, they no longer need embassies. They leave the country's airports, ports, and borders every day.
Back then, we were denied the freedom to leave. Today, many are being denied the reason to stay.
This is the drama of our time. A place is not emptied only when people leave. It is emptied when they lose faith that the future can be built here. And it is precisely this faith that we have come to reclaim.
MESSAGE OF JULY 2
July 2 is not just the memory of a protest but the memory of a people who, in their darkest moment, chose freedom.
Today we do not want to live with the nostalgia of that day but to give it a sequel.
Because history does not seek to repeat itself. History seeks to be fulfilled. Those who took to the streets in 1990 did not sacrifice Albania to remain hostage to a political class that changes flags, but not habits.
They did not sacrifice their children to leave the country en masse.
They did not sacrifice so that corruption could become a system and injustice could return to normality.
Therefore, from the protest square in July 2026, citizens are sending a clear message.
Patience is not infinite.
No power is stronger than an awakened people.
No wall is stronger than a society that loses its fear.
In 1990, the wall that separated us from the world collapsed.
Today is the time to tear down the wall that separates us from our state.
Albania is no one's property.
It is the home of its citizens.
And when citizens decide to take their destiny back into their own hands, no power can stop them.
