A people that does not read is ruled by those who control the screen

A people that does not read is ruled by those who control the screen

A friend told me one day that he likes what I write, but could I write shorter? We live in a time when we don't have the patience to read.

Once upon a time, the government was afraid of books. Today, it no longer needs to ban them. It is enough to make them unbearable. It does not need to burn libraries. It is enough to fill the screen with so much noise, scandals, videos and breaking news that the citizen no longer has the time and concentration to read several pages in a row.

This is the new poverty: not a lack of information, but a lack of attention.

Today's man reads headlines, comments, messages and video captions, but fewer and fewer books, studies, laws and full analyses. He knows how to read words, but often loses the ability to follow an argument, to distinguish fact from opinion and evidence from manipulation. This is the post-literary society: surrounded by words, but increasingly distant from thought.

Reading is not a luxury

Deep reading is not just a hobby. It is an exercise for the mind. It teaches us to stay focused, to understand an argument that is not ours, and to judge it before accepting or rejecting it. It teaches us that reality is not always divided into absolute good and absolute evil.

Without this discipline, democracy weakens. Democracy is not sustained by elections alone, but by citizens who can read, compare, remember, and judge.

Algorithm against the book

The book demands silence. The algorithm demands distraction. The book demands you to stay. The platform teaches you to move. The book builds meaning slowly. The short video demands immediate response. The algorithm is not designed to make us smarter, but to keep us on the screen as long as possible. So the decline in reading is not just an individual problem. It is related to an economy that profits from fragmented attention.

In this model, the citizen who reads quietly for two hours is a lost consumer.

Screen policy

The consequences are also political. In a society that does not read deeply, slogan beats argument, video beats document, and anger beats fact. Politics no longer needs to explain. It must excite. Nuance is seen as weakness. Complexity as incompetence. The most successful politician is not necessarily the one who understands the state best, but the one who understands the algorithm best.

This is the ideal terrain for populism: clear enemy, simple solution, repeated label.

Albanians are entering post-reading, without completing the reading era

For Albanian societies, the risk is even greater. We are entering the post-literary era without fully consolidating the reading culture. Circulations are small, libraries are weak, and public debate is dominated by television, portals, and social networks.

Inteligjenca artificiale: Mjet apo zëvendësim i mendimit?

Pabarazia e re

It's enough for him to check the screen.

Po ndodh...
