Veliaj requests release in GJKKO Appeal, court postpones decision to Wednesday

The Appeals Court's decision on Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, who is seeking his release, has been postponed to March 12, at 12:30.

The postponement was made after lawyers requested time to familiarize themselves with the new evidence. Meanwhile, it is learned that Veliaj has not yet presented his arguments before the black squads.

We recall that earlier, Veliaj's lawyer, Ermir Beta, made submissions and insisted that the security measure "prison arrest" for Veliaj should be revoked, and that the mayor of Tirana be given the opportunity to be released from detention.

He said that Veliaj is not at any risk of destroying or damaging evidence, nor of intimidating witnesses.

The appeal of the mayor of Tirana, who was arrested on February 10, is being reviewed by Judge Engert Pëllumbi, who is known as the judge who sentenced former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri to prison.

At the same session, four businessmen also appeared to appeal the measure, Elman Abule, who is in prison custody, and the other three, Shkëlqim Fusha, Gentian Sula, and Meriman Palushi, who are under obligation to appear.

Erion Veliaj is accused of the criminal offenses of "Passive Corruption" and "Money Laundering", committed in collaboration with his wife Ajola Xoxa, who is being investigated under the mandatory reporting measure, also for failure to declare assets.
