An Albanian drug gang is said to have operated several large cannabis plantations in North Rhine-Westphalia. Last May, investigators seized almost 1,200 cannabis plants in Dormagen, around 4,600 in Lüdenscheid and 550 in Bad Salzuflen. On Wednesday, the trial against seven Albanian defendants aged 21 to 51 began at the Düsseldorf Regional Court.

The public prosecutor's office accuses them of commercial cultivation and drug trafficking similar to gangs in not small quantities or of aiding and abetting them. At first, defense lawyers announced statements from their clients.

According to the indictment, two leaders had leased real estate and recruited five compatriots to manage the plantations permanently. The helpers, aged 21 to 34, were promised 10,000 euros for the harvest.

Exposed planned kidnapping activities

The plantations were exposed by another criminal case, said prosecutor Meike Beckmann. It was about a planned kidnapping in the drug environment. Two Latvian mercenaries were charged. Both were supposed to kidnap a man for an Asian drug lord. However, they had attracted the attention of a police patrol and were arrested.

During further investigations, 25 drug investigators came across the now-indicted Albanians in May. They had been under surveillance for weeks. On May 6 last year, investigators finally raided and dug up the plantations. Special task forces (SEK) were also involved in the operation. In Bad Salzuflen, Dormagen, Herne, Lüdenscheid, Neuss and Oberhausen, investigators raided.

The average energy consumption for the illegal plantations was said to have been around two million kilowatt hours per year. This was roughly equivalent to the annual consumption of 400 households. The suspects are said to have illegally tapped electricity from the power grid.

The plantations are said to have yielded 150 kilograms of cannabis for harvest. Seven more days of trial are scheduled for the trial until March 23.
