Selenica against merging with Vlora, 19 unanimous votes in the Municipal Council: Don't merge us!

The Municipal Council of Selenica gathered this Friday in an extraordinary meeting to oppose the proposal for the merger of this municipality with the Municipality of Vlora, within the framework of the new territorial reform proposed by the socialist majority.
With 19 votes in favor, left and right-wing councilors have expressed their opposition to the merger of the Municipality of Selenica and its unification with Vlora. During the meeting, it was emphasized that such a change would lead to the removal of services from citizens and would make it more difficult to administer rural areas.
From the meeting, the councilors called on the district's deputies, Vullnet Sinaj and Bujar Leskaj, to speak out against the proposal and not support the approval of the territorial reform in this form.
Also present was the Mayor of Selenica, Nertil Bellaj, who presented his arguments in favor of preserving the Municipality of Selenica as a separate unit, referring to the financial capacities, economic performance and the level of investments made over the years.
According to the data presented by him, Selenica ranks among the municipalities with good performance in per capita income and investments for communities, while the municipality's public debt is at a low level.
"You have gained the trust of the residents of this area. Just like you and I, through television, in the last days of July and the first days of August we were introduced to the draft of the reform commission that the Municipality of Selenica will join the Municipality of Vlora. After the news came another news, where one of the deputies, coming out and signing and expressing that this request was from the residents. It was from the people that Selenica should join Vlora.
This statement embarrassed us all, it made me and you, the councilors, decide that we ourselves wanted to go to Vlora. My official position has been, before the reform is carried out, the draft should come. Wherever I have had the opportunity to speak, I have expressed my opinion with arguments why the Municipality of Selenica should remain. As an obligation to the people, the councilors, I am repeating it once again. Among the main points of the reform was the financial capacities of the municipality. We are ranked the 14th municipality in Albania with its per capita income, the 9th municipality in Albania where the expenses we make are for investment.
We invest in our communities, where people and residents need it. We are the 29th municipality for functionality, we are not ranked 47th or 61st, we are ranked 29th. This is a report made by the commission. The public debt of the Municipality of Selenica is 3.6%. We have good economic performance, and the first municipalities for economic diversity. We depend on all sectors. We have quadrupled our revenues without increasing the fiscal burden," he said, among other things.
