Live broadcast of the trial of the American mother who killed three children,

The defense attorney of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, Plarent Ndreca, has reacted to the decision that does not allow the broadcast of court proceedings in Albania with cameras.

In his reaction, Ndreca also refers to the case of Lindsay Clancy, the American mother accused of murdering her three children, whose trial is being broadcast live in the US, despite the sensitive nature of the case.

According to Ndreca, this case clearly shows that Albanian justice still has a way to go in terms of respecting the constitutional principle of publicity of court hearings.

Ndreca's full reaction:

This is the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the American mother accused of murdering her three children. Her defense in court relies on severe mental health problems after giving birth. The trial publicly discusses psychiatric diagnoses, medications, suicidal thoughts and deeply private details of her life. She is on trial for the murder of three children.

And yet, the trial is public. The cameras are in the courtroom. The evidence is broadcast. Privacy does not exist in a state trial.

Meanwhile, in Albania, in processes of extraordinary public interest, the doors are closed and the cameras are removed in the name of privacy.

Two realities. Two standards of justice publicity.

There, privacy is sought to be protected without shutting down justice. Here, to protect privacy, we shut down justice.

This is perhaps the clearest indication of how much further we still have to go in respecting the constitutional principle of publicity of court hearings.
