Meloni breaks Berlusconi's record! Longest-lasting government in Italy since World War II

Giorgia Meloni is just days away from a historic record. The Italian Prime Minister is set to become the longest-serving head of government in Italy since World War II, surpassing the record of 1,412 days set by Silvio Berlusconi in 2005.

Meloni, who came to power in October 2022, has managed to keep her coalition together for nearly four years. In a country that has gone through 68 governments in nearly 80 years, this is a significant change.

Analysts estimate that one of the main achievements of the Meloni government has been restoring confidence in public finances, through greater control of the deficit and limiting costly policies, such as the Superbonus scheme for housing renovation.

The government also highlights the results in the labor market. According to Italian officials, about 1.2 million people have joined the labor market and unemployment has fallen below 6%.

But there is another side to Meloni's balance sheet. Economists say that while the government has shown fiscal discipline, progress on structural reforms has been limited. Public administration, the health system and education have changed little, while promised institutional reforms have stalled.

In domestic policy, the government has focused heavily on order and immigration. The number of new arrivals of irregular migrants fell to 66,316 last year, from 157,651 in 2023.

However, recent months have dealt a blow to Meloni. She suffered a defeat in the referendum on judicial reform, while her once-close relationship with US President Donald Trump has been damaged.

Meanwhile, a new factor is emerging for the 2027 elections: former general Roberto Vannacci and his far-right party. A recent poll put his support at around 8%.

This creates a dilemma for Meloni. An alliance with Vannacci could secure the necessary votes, but it could alienate moderate voters and unsettle European partners. If she does not cooperate with him, the election outcome could be unclear and require a post-election deal.
