He is expected to be the new president of Kosovo, but who is Bekim Sejdiu?

The leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti , and the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku , have concluded their next meeting on the issue of electing the president, reaching an agreement.
After negotiations between the two parties, it has been decided that the candidate for the post of president will be Bekim Sejdiu, a former judge at the Constitutional Court.
But who is Bekim Sejdiu?
Bekim Sejdiu, born in 1974, has a long career in law, diplomacy, and academia. He served as a judge of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo from April 2015 until 2021, when he resigned from this position.
During his term at the Constitutional Court, Sejdiu has been the reporting judge in several cases of political importance, including the 2020 decision that led to the overthrow of Avdullah Hoti's Government.
Before his appointment to the Constitutional Court, Sejdiu served in diplomacy. He was Kosovo's ambassador to Turkey from 2008 to 2012, and then served as Kosovo's Consul General in New York from 2012 to 2014.
Before his appointment as ambassador, Sejdiu was a political advisor in the cabinet of the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo.
He is also a professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Pristina, where he has been lecturing since 2002.
He completed his law studies at the University of Prishtina, and also completed postgraduate studies in the field of international relations, democracy and human rights. He holds a doctorate in the field of international and diplomatic studies.
Meanwhile, Kurti and Abdixhiku have held several meetings as part of negotiations to find a consensual candidate for president.
The meetings were initially focused on harmonizing the principles and profile of the head of state, while so far there has been no official announcement of a final agreement.
Even the last meeting, held on Saturday night at the Kosovo Assembly premises, ended without a concrete announcement, leaving negotiations open for the coming days.
The issue of electing a president has been open since April 2026, when the term of former President Vjosa Osmani ended. Since then, the position of acting president has been held by Albulena Haxhiu.
The election of the President in the Assembly requires the presence of at least 80 deputies in the hall. In the first two rounds of voting, the candidate must receive two-thirds of the votes of all deputies, namely 80 votes.
In the third round, the president is elected with a majority of votes of all deputies, i.e. with at least 61 votes.
