Beijing on flood alert! Landslides block two rivers, new lake threatens China and Nepal

China is warning of a high risk of another flood near the border with Nepal after landslides created a new natural lake.
The debris from the collapse has blocked the flow of two rivers, the Chhochen Khola and the Purepu Tsangpo, causing water to pool behind the barrier created by soil and rocks.
By Friday, the lake had accumulated about 2.5 million cubic meters of water, while the level is expected to rise further due to rainfall. Chinese authorities fear that if the natural barrier cannot withstand the water pressure, the lake could overflow and cause a new wave of floods and landslides in the surrounding areas.
The warning comes just days after a major flood in the region left hundreds dead and hundreds missing. Scientists say the disaster may have been caused by the collapse of a glacier, which released a large amount of water and debris that spread along the river. Due to the danger of the situation, Chinese authorities have temporarily suspended some rescue operations, while engineering teams are constantly monitoring the water level and stability of the lake.
Drones are also being used to monitor the area and identify changes that could indicate a breach or collapse of the barrier. However, there is still hope that not every rise in water level will necessarily lead to a catastrophe. There is a possibility that the water will gradually find a natural path out of the lake, reducing the pressure and avoiding a flash flood.
Meanwhile, Nepal has also taken precautionary measures. Authorities have asked residents to stay away from the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, as possible blockages of the streams and rising water levels could cause further flooding.
